DUBLIN, Ireland - Foreign Minister Simon Coveney has condemned "disgraceful scenes of police brutality" at the funeral of Al Jazeera reporter Shireen Abu Akleh in Jerusalem Friday.
In a tweet, he said, "These are disgraceful scenes of police brutality at a hugely sensitive funeral."
"Unacceptable, and the international community should strongly condemn it."
Earlier, Coveney called for an independent investigation into Abu Akleh's death.
The European Union was "appalled" by the police's use of "unnecessary force" before and during the journalist's funeral.
The White House also called footage of Israeli police storming the procession "deeply disturbing."
"We've all seen those images, obviously disturbing," U.S. Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters.
"We regret the interfering with what should have been a peaceful procession," she said.
Pallbearers struggled to keep Abu Akleh's coffin from falling to the ground as Israeli police officers charged at them, grabbing Palestinian flags from mourners.
