DUBLIN, Ireland - Simon Harris, Minister for Further and Higher Education, has accused Israel of waging a war on children.
He said in the Dil that what Hamas did was despicable and that Israel had the right to defend itself. However, he claimed that the original right had now devolved into a "war on children" and that Israel was a country blinded by rage.
"There is no doubt that what Hamas did was heinous, and we have all condemned it." It is entirely unacceptable. It was a terror attack on the Israeli people. It should be condemned, and Israel has the right to self-defense."
"But that right to defend itself has now become, in my view, a war on children, and you cannot build peace on the mass graves of children," he told the House of Commons.
"Unfortunately, a country has become blinded by rage," he said.
There have been calls for the government to allow TDs to vote freely on motions concerning the Middle East situation in the Dil this week.
Sinn Fin plans to call on the government to refer Israel to the International Criminal Court, while the Social Democrats call for the Israeli ambassador to be expelled.
The government says it does not support these two motions.
Labour has confirmed its support for the two opposition party motions. At the same time, Social Democrats TD Gary Gannon has stated that it is time for Israel to face international consequences for its actions in Gaza.
Despite tens of thousands of emails sent to TDs on the subject recently, the government insists on maintaining diplomatic relations.
